I'm a patient person. I understand that machines are people too. They need love and attention, whether it be gentle button-pushing or oiling the gears. For those who don't think machines should be allowed their human-like flaws, there is hope of a future where everything works, all the time.
InfoWorld has just published their list of 10 future shocks for the next 10 years. They went for 10 years, 'cause 30 years ahead sounded too sci-fi. If you ask me, having some of those things in the next 10 years is a little scifi.
Future shock number 3: Evertyhing works. Say what? No way. Not possible! That's right up there with Shock number 6, human-free manufacturing. There's a human and a dog in the factory-- the human is there to feed the dog and the dog is there to make sure the human doesn't touch anything. And then what of all the humans?
This is where the Star Trek future comes into play. A society constructed of poverty and wealth has been effaced by this progressive notion of everything working. There, people work only to better themselves rather than for accumulation of wealth.
Everything works.
